Chairman of Vnesheconombank delivered a guest lecture at GSOM SPbU

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, Chairman of Vnesheconombank Sergey Gorkov delivered a lecture  “Opportunities for Russian Economy Breakthrough”. The Hall of GSOM SPbU was full, but even more than a thousand people watched the broadcast of the lecture online on the website and on the page of the School on Facebook. "We need a technological revolution and no social revolution" — by these words Sergei Gorkov headed his speech devoted to the areas of economy and industry in which Russia can make a technological revolution, and answers to questions about how it can be implemented and why it is important.

On the day of the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution, Chairman of Vnesheconombank began his lecture with historical information. He offered to guests to compare the economic situation of Russia on the eve of the revolution and today. The main conclusion made by the speaker was that Russia has always been among the first exporters of grain and oil production, but the sector of machine building in the country's GDP has remained at an extremely low level, and Russia's share in world GDP has halved.

As the world economy develops at the expense of those who have moved into «a new technological era», the Russian economy needs to devote all its efforts to changing the usual scenario. Sergey Gorkov noted that Russia has the technologies and resources necessary for development, which must be used competently.

Global Challenges and Opportunities for the Economy

The Chairman of Vnesheconombank — the bank which main task is to finance projects that contribute to the development of the country's economy, noted that he  considers that it is needed to invest in most innovative spheres in today's reality:

  • breakthrough technologies, such as new types of energy, unmanned vehicles, drones, virtual reality and others;
  • industry 4.0 - end-to-end digitalization of all physical assets and their integration into the digital ecosystem;
  • private capital competes with the state even in space;
  • the age of business owners and founders of startups is decreasing, more and more students and high school children creates their own projects;
  • development of convergent technologies — the combination of nano-, bio-, IT- and cognitive technologies;
  • artificial intelligence beyond the usual concept of cyborgs, based on the concept of a superman;
  • the development of quantum technologies, the creation of quantum computers;
  • blockchain, as a tool to improve the effectiveness of public administration.

Vnesheconombank's Strategy for Innovation

Speaking about the bank's development strategy, Sergey Gorkov noted that there are many innovative ideas in Russia, and there is a good fundamental basis for their realization, but at the next stage - the search for financing, sales markets, etc. - russian projects are facing a "brick wall", and only a few of them can pass through. The Russian market today characterizes the unreadiness of consumers for innovation, the lack of demand for advanced technologies from corporations. As a result, a large number of projects are not being implemented in Russia and are leaving for Silicon Valley, Israel and China. As part of its development strategy, VEB considers the Asian market to be of high priority, characterized by rapid growth and high capacity (3 billion inhabitants). In China, there is a request for innovation: both the state and private companies are actively investing and supporting technologic projects. This market can help Russian ambitious projects find the necessary investments and consumers.

Multimodal strategies as a way to build a business model in a rapidly changing world

Sergey Gorkov is a fan of the game in Go. To explain his vision of the approach of creating business models in the economy of the future, he spoke about the universal method that was developed in ancient China, and on the basis of which the game Go is built. In business schools there are usually two scenarios for building strategies - best and worst, on which, as a rule, all business models are  based. In practice, it turns out that the main thing is not to guess the scenario, but to be able to change it quickly. In fact, you need to know the point of bifurcation, to feel the moment when you can change the course. The main thing in the strategy today is "multimodality" or flexibility of movement.

Modern leaders go for feats

Who is the leader of the future, what does the leader look like today? Sergey Gorkov shared the results of the study of Dominic Barton, global director of McKinsey, which was compiled on the basis of 700 interviews with leaders and influential people around the globe. The study tells about the qualities that characterizes the modern leader. Today, the basic principles of leadership are not determined by the post - in many start-ups there are no classical leaders. Leader today is stubborn, brave, purposeful, has an emotional intelligence and thinks about several steps forward, monitors technology and motivates "without a title." Another of the main distinctive qualities of a leader is unselfish: all the achievements that a leader seeks are unselfish. Their goal is a feat, not a reward.  One more interesting charateristic in the study is "energy management", which fell into the list of qualities from Dominic Barton after his interview with Sergey. In modern conditions, the KPI system does not work as affectively as needed, and the basic part of motivation today is the management of the energies and values of the team.

The founders of business are younger and younger

The age of the founders of business is decreasing. Sergey Gorkov noted this fact and told about the experience of launching several experimental hatokons for students and schoolchildren, as a result of which 50% of decisions were received from schoolchildren aged 14 to 17 years. The consequence of this experiment was the creation of the "Department of teenagers" in the Vnesheconombank's Competence Center for the blockchain, where only adolescents aged 14-17 would work and are already working. They do not just participate in the competition, but work on real projects and offer working solutions. According to the speaker, schoolchildren are able to think more creatively.

At the end of the lecture the Chairman of Vnesheconombank wished all members of GSOM Family to develop, and not become a "vegetable", but to "head and lead". Guests were able to ask questions to the lecturer using their gadgets. Students and graduates of the School were interested in the topics of crypto-currencies, career opportunities, technologies, artificial intelligence. At the end of the speech, Sergey Gorkov once again stressed the lack of specialists in the field of blockchain and the intention to train the specialists, and also announced that further discussion of the interaction with the Graduate School of Management SPbU on this issue is planned.
