Extended abstract:
Dissertation of Tatiana Beliaeva is devoted to the analysis of firms’ strategic orientations (entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, and learning orientation) and their individual and joint (complementary) effects on firm performance in different environmental contexts. Small and medium-sized enterprises have an important role in the economy, but also are more vulnerable to various environmental pressures. The study addresses the question of when and under what conditions do strategic orientations individually and jointly relate to firm performance in different environmental contexts.
The study utilized three datasets on SMEs from different countries:
The main results are revealing of unique and shared contribution of strategic orientations to firm performance, and identifying peculiarities of strategic orientations’ effects in various country contexts, such as economic crisis, institutional environment, and developed and emerging markets, and industry settings. The results contribute to the literature on strategic orientations by applying an integrative approach to the analysis and specifying the relationship between orientations and firm performance in a variety of contexts. The results have also implications for research on complementarities in organizations as well as contextual research in management.
The dissertation comprises an extended introductory part with an overview of the literature and discussion of the framing, methodology, results, and contributions of the whole study, as well as five independent publications.
