About
Researchers from the Center for Entrepreneurship of GSOM SPbU will present their study on the topic: "Should I stay or should I go? The role of human, financial, and social capital in entrepreneurial exit."
The study investigates the relationship between entrepreneur’s capitals (human, social and financial) and probability of exit from their businesses, accounting for the moderating role of opportunity perception. The study was conducted on the basis of GEM data from 28192 respondents from 48 countries. Human capital covers knowledge and skills necessary to conduct entrepreneurial activity. Social capital consists of entrepreneur’s personal and professional social network. Financial capital stands for monetary resources required for running a business. In this study, the authors found that high levels of all types of capitals lead to higher probability of voluntary- and failure-based exit, comparing to non-exit. Moreover, the positive perception of opportunities in external environment allow entrepreneurs get more by strengthening the link between financial capital and entrepreneurial exit. Research findings show the important role of all capitals in perceiving higher opportunity costs of continuing current business then closing it and starting a new one. It can be inferred the most important role in entrepreneurial exit belongs to financial capital coupled with perception of opportunities in the external environment by entrepreneurs.
