In the modern world big data become one of key sources of competitive advantage for firms. Some of them create innovative business models based on insights generated from tons of data about consumers, competitors, and supply chains. Recent studies showed big data drives firm performance both in direct and indirect ways. However, there is still room for further research to investigate the specificity of big data influence on performance in different context. In this study we seek to explore SMEs context by looking at how big data dimensions may contribute to performance of small firms in crisis. Thus, we consider big data as high-volume, high-velocity, high-veracity and high-variety information assets that may enhance insight, decision-making and process automation. By now little research has been done to understand the consequences of using big data as a tool for managerial decision-making. In our study we look at particular decision-making aspect of big data usage through the lens of resource-based view (RBV). Based on the sample of 307 Russian SMEs, we identify that different dimension of big data differently influence firm performance. Moreover, their impact may depend on a firm’s ability to acquire new competences.
