Family firms (FFs) are unique business entities, which are inherently different from firms with other types of ownership, especially, due to the complexity of succession process. Multigenerational family members become important actors in FFs succession and differently shape the FF’s development dynamics. But how does FFs scholarship study the phenomenon of succession? And what is the role of generations in FFs succession process? To answer these questions, we conduct a systematic literature review of 131 journal articles published from 1976 to 2022 focusing on the FFs succession issues. Our data sources are Web of Science and EBSCO databases. On the basis of our findings, we suggest promising future research directions in the area for further research inquiry.
