Cashless payments have become an integral component of modern society and a crucial factor in the transition to a digital economy, promoting cost reduction and improving overall welfare. The frequency of using different payment instruments varies among consumers, even with equal access to payment infrastructure. The goal of this research is to develop a model of consumer payment instrument usage. This study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research conducted in Russia from 2018 to 2022. The theoretical contribution includes a constructed map of the benefits of using payment instruments, as well as the BIUM model, a benefits-based model for explaining the intensity of payment instrument usage. From a practical perspective, the presented results are useful for reevaluating elements of product strategies for financial service providers, as well as offering a new perspective on encouraging financial service usage when access is no longer a barrier.
