First and second year Bachelor students of the Graduate School of Management at St. Petersburg State University (GSOM SPbU) tell us how they passed the exam, moved to a new city and adapted to student life.

 

How did you imagine the university when you were in high school?

Andrey Proskuryakov, first-year student of the Management program (from Blagoveshchensk) — When I was in school, I imagined how my friends and I would drive from the dormitory to the campus. I knew that studying at the university would be more difficult, but at the same time more interesting, because you are studying courses that are directly related to your future specialty.

 

Maxim Lopatin-Lanskoy, second year student of the Management program, (from Chita) — All my expectations were based on the stories of friends and parents. I knew two things about student life: the session is difficult, and that during the semester you need to study, otherwise the session will be even more difficult. Having moved to St. Petersburg and entered the university, I learned a lot, for example, how to pay the rent.

 

Asya Nikonova, second year student of the Management program (St. Petersburg) — At school, it seemed to me that being a student is a happy time when you immerse in adulthood, begin to take the first independent actions, and gain experience. This time seemed to be carefree, cheerful, filled with positive emotions.

 

What difficulties did you face on your way to University life?

Natalya Batueva, first-year student of the Management program (from Perm) — The most difficult subject on the exam was mathematics. It was not easy morally, because I had to take the exam ahead of schedule, but it was postponed until the summer. The move out of town went smoothly. I'm lucky to live in a hostel with very nice neighbors.

 

Andrey Proskuryakov, first-year student of the Management program (Blagoveshchensk) — For me, the most difficult thing was preparing for the exam. I think this is a great emotional burden for anyone. I dreamed of entering the GSOM, so I waited for the results with excitement and trepidation. It was not scary to move, on the contrary it was interesting. I was leaving with pleasure, anticipating a new stage in my life.

 

Do you participate in the extracurricular life of the Business School?

Natalya Batueva, first-year student of the Management program (Perm) — I joined the GSOM Sport & Culture team: we organize a variety of extracurricular activities —  from soccer and golf competitions to the Drucker Awards ("student Oscars"). Also I do copywriting: I write posts for social networks and news. I also applied to participate in Management Career Week.

 

Maxim Lopatin-Lanskoy, second year student of the Management program, (Chita) — I participated in Management Career Week as a volunteer. This year I was the Deputy Head of its Logistics Department. From the first year I have been participating in case championships, before that I had never even heard about that. 

 

Asya Nikonova, second year student of the Management program (St. Petersburg) — I am a member of the student council, several times a month we hold meetings and discuss topical issues. I was the organizer of Management Career Week last spring. Also I participated in the preparation of a global meeting of alumni, faculty, students and partners — GSOM Family Day, solved cases from L'Oreal. I take part wherever possible: for example, this year I entered the organizing committee of the conference "Management of the Future". Extracurricular activities are an integral part of university life. If in studies I can realize my knowledge, then in extracurricular activities - as a person, go beyond textbooks and try myself as a manager-leader.

 

Share some tips for prospective GSOM SPbU students.

Andrey Proskuryakov, first-year student of the Management program (Blagoveshchensk)  — The most difficult thing for admission is the exam. Therefore, it is better to focus primarily on it. There is no need to worry about studying at GSOM — this is a community of like-minded people. There are wonderful teachers and guys here.

 

Maxim Lopatin-Lanskoy, second year student of the Management program, (Chita) — Be active in extracurricular activities. Go to pairs, learn theory and reinforce it with practice, otherwise it will be forgotten. Check your corporate email regularly — there can be some academic information, news from Career Center, professors and the administration of the Business School.

As for the everyday issue, you don't need to take too many things from home: if you need something, you can buy it on the spot or borrow it from your dorm neighbors.

Natalya Batueva, first-year student of the Management program (Perm) — In my opinion, there is no need to worry about the USE. With systematic preparation, everything will be good, you just need to get together and show what you are capable of. You shouldn't worry about USE scores either, I consider the main thing is to correctly distribute the time of work and rest and believe in yourself.
