Elizaveta Troyanova, Director of the Career Center of the Graduate School of Management at St. Petersburg State University (GSOM SPbU), told in a Rusbase article about what case competitions are, how they help students find work, and how a business school helps its students to organize and prepare for case competitions.
“Every year, dozens of GSOM students from St. Petersburg State University take part in case competitions held by different companies or universities and take prizes. To provide support to students, we have created a Case Club — a career project that brings together the most motivated and active students. Club members learn together to solve cases and understand what is necessary for successful selection and participation in such competitions. Students also have the opportunity to work on consulting projects, developing their own solutions. GSOM maintains close contacts with BIG-3 (BCG, McKinsey, Bain & Company), BIG-4 (EY, KPMG, PwC, Deloitte). Their experts come to the business school to conduct sessions on preparing and solving cases, ” said Elizaveta Troyanova.
Case competitions are a popular way of interaction between companies and university students. They simulate real working conditions in a team and help evaluate the individual qualities of participants and their ability to work on a project as a team. According to the results of the case competition, companies invite students for internships or offer employment.
