Ontico, an organizer of events for developers and IT company leaders, announced the best reports of 2022. Among them "Sorry, No Understand": Cognitive Aspects of Knowledge Exchange by Tatiana Gavrilova, Head of the Department of Information Technologies in Management at the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg University (GSOM SPbU), Chair of St. Petersburg Division of Russian Association for Artificial Intelligence. She gave the talk at KnowledgeConf, a professional conference on knowledge management.
Information overload and online format decrease the efficiency of traditional business communication methods (briefs, presentations, brainstorming) and business correspondence. "Broken telephone" is becoming a common obstacle in the work process. How can we help ourselves and our colleagues to perceive information in the same way?
Tatiana Gavrilova believes that the leading role in the ability to analyze and convey information belongs to a person's cognitive style features. Some of them can be trained: field independence (the ability to determine the main thing), generalization ability, cognitive equivalence range (forming classes and categories). In her talk, she shares one of the keys to be understood — visualization of information using appropriate diagrams. Just drawing a diagram is not enough. It is important to arrange information according to the laws of perception. The researcher sums up the experience of visual-analytical thinking trainings in companies and tells about the approaches to team formation with account for cognitive style features. You can listen to the talk and take a test for field independence here.
