On May 23, 2020, the Nobel laureate, Honored Professor of the Business School named after Haas University of Berkeley, Honorary Doctor of St. Petersburg University Oliver Williamson was gone. Professor Williamson was rightfully considered one of the most famous classical institutionalists and stood at the origins of the creation of the Graduate School of Management at St. Petersburg University.
Oliver Williamson was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2009 and he was the founder and classic of the new institutional economics, professor at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. His work in the field of management theory and intra-corporate transactions became the basis of many practical applications — from new methods of work of transnational corporations and the theory of work with intra-corporate conflicts to outsourcing and leasing of personnel, intra-corporate contracts, etc. They had a significant impact on the development of research at GSOM SPbU .
In 1997, Oliver Williamson visited St. Petersburg and took part in the graduation ceremony of the first Bachelor students of the Graduate School of Management (then the Faculty of Management) of St. Petersburg University. In the same year, he became Honorary Doctor of St. Petersburg University.
His services to economic science became the inspiration for the creation of new knowledge in the field of management and an incentive for the further development of world-class scientific research at GSOM SPbU.
