The students of the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University,Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism, the Faculty of Urban and Regional Development of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and the Institute of Design and Urban Studies of ITMO University worked together for two weeks on projects to increase the tourist attractiveness of Vyborg, Staraya Ladoga and Shlisselburg. The final of the Urbanist Summer School was held on July 24 at the Mikhailovskaya Dacha campus of the GSOM SPbSU.
Online classes and lectures on urban development for students of three universities began on July 7, and the project started offline on July 14. 36 participants divided into 6 interdisciplinary teams and went to the Leningrad region for field research. Young urbanists did not just visit cities, but met with municipal authorities and conducted a survey of local residents to identify their needs. Based on the information received the students formulated ideas for improving the tourist climate.
For example, in Staraya Ladoga, school participants proposed restoring several key monuments, opening a merchant's tea house, and came up with a new tourist route that would unite all the architectural masterpieces of the settlement: from the Staraya Ladoga fortress to the Lopukhinka estate. According to young urbanists there are not enough places for family vacations in Vyborg. While the adults are learning about history, the kids could spend time in the medieval workshops. A virtual map of Vyborg, where one could see the way to a bakery to bake a pretzel, a smithy, a glass-blowing workshop and other similar objects, as well as souvenir shops with the products of local artists and establishments offering local cuisine, would make the city more comfortable and attractive for tourists .
“Now everyone visits Oreshek, but few people come to Shlisselburg, and there is an interesting museum of the city, there are old canals, there is a shipyard and all the conditions for the development of industrial tourism. One of our ideas is to create an eco-route along the canals so that people can both admire these wonderful places and spend time with health benefits. Glamping could be organized at the end of the route. We are confident that Shlisselburg has tourism potential. Of course, such projects are being done for a long time, and we only had two weeks to study everything, but it was very interesting to work, and I am sure that this is a very useful experience,” Iolanta Chomag, a student of the Smart City Management program, shared her impressions » GSOM SPbU, a member of the winning team of the Urbanist Summer School.
The students presented to the jury six projects for the development of cities in the Leningrad region. The works were evaluated by the management and teachers of the GSOM SPbU, the representatives of the Committee for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the Leningrad Region and city administrations.
“Participation in the Urbanist Summer School is, first of all, an opportunity to work with urbanists from other universities. Someone knows how to do digital analytics well, someone can do space analytics, someone is great at counting and understands management. This interdisciplinary and interuniversity junction allows you to make very deep, interesting projects. Secondly, this is a great opportunity to get a case in the portfolio and practical experience that will come in handy when applying for a job. Our team worked on the tourism potential of Vyborg. There are a lot of ideas. It seems to me that Vyborg can become an ideal place for a holiday in the New Year and Christmas. The surroundings of the city are suitable for a very beautiful Christmas market in the best European traditions. This is something that could attract tourists in the low season,” said Maria Zachinyaeva, a student at the Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism.
The Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University and the Committee for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the Leningrad Region were the organizers of the Summer School of the Urbanist.
