Corporate educational programs of GSOM SPbU were presented at the Summit of HR Directors of Russia and the CIS in Moscow.
Olga Nikiforova, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Sociology at St. Petersburg State University, spoke about the importance of business education for a manager’s career at the XXIV Summit of HR Directors of Russia and the CIS.
In particular, as part of the report “The University as an HR Partner”, she presented the online programs of additional professional education Essentials of GSOM SPbU for line and middle managers.
As Olga Nikiforova said, there was an urgent need for an innovative approach to solving this issue in the context of a personnel shortage and an active search for employees by HR specialists in Russia.
“It is already clear that managers, especially middle managers, cannot be found on the free market,” the expert added. “To grow them ourselves, we need young employees who are ready to develop and work — you need to look for them somewhere. It will not be possible to solve this issue using the methods of the “employer labor market”, replacing some people with others — simply because these people are not on the market, and, moreover, with the necessary competencies.”
Olga Nikiforova noted that St. Petersburg State University has been inviting employers to partnership for many years, one of the key forms of which is the participation of representatives of the organization in the work of educational and methodological commissions and methodological councils, Councils of educational programs of St. Petersburg State University, state examination commissions, etc.
“To this day, many HR directors and top managers still have old stereotypes that working with universities is ineffective. In their opinion, this expenditure of working time and energy often does not bring real benefit to the company: trainees do not return to the company, they have only theoretical knowledge that is not suitable for practice. And this is a big mistake,” the expert said.
Today, in the process of studying, the students of St. Petersburg State University and GSOM SPbU acquire all the necessary competencies, which are consistent not only with the requirements of professional standards, but also with the current needs of companies that are ready to cooperate to develop their human resources potential.
Such companies actively participated with the proposals for thesis topics, participation in the state final certification, with their own cases and jointly developed internship programs.
Companies are conducting a partnership dialogue, which is not aimed at a formal solution to the problem of “interacting with a university” for show, but at strategic partnership including the formation of a professional expert community with their own participation. Students see interested employers already in the first years of study, and of course, while defending their diploma, they often already know their future place of work, so it is impossible to “catch” them on the free labor market.
Olga Nikiforova spoke in detail about another pressing problem in managing the development of human resources — the huge number of unscrupulous providers of additional training programs.
“Today, anyone can create their own course, marathon or workshop and sell it on the free market. And some companies fall into the stereotype: what sounds relevant and is sold on a well-known online platform seems more attractive. But under a beautiful cover and an attractive marketing campaign, there is often no serious methodological base, no professional teaching staff, no expertise,” said Olga Nikiforova. — At the Summit, we demonstrated a line of Essentials programs from the Center for Online Further Education at GSOM SPbU, which may be most relevant for developing the competencies of middle management, which aroused great interest among the audience of HR directors in Russia. Judging by the questions and responses after our speech, the opinion of many participants regarding interaction with universities has changed.”
The expert is confident that universities need to continue dialogue with business and demonstrate not only their capabilities, but also successful experience in implementing existing partnership programs, as well as prospects for cooperation in the interests of education, business, youth and the state.

Designing hybrid classrooms has proven to be a challenge. It was important for us that the solution was fully consistent with our teaching methodology. In partnership with leading technology companies, we managed to achieve the desired result — to create a convenient and effective IT architecture for hybrid learning. Now we are willing to share insights with colleagues, in particular, we teach how to teach in the digital environment,” noted Yuri Ekimov in a comment to the NEP portal - scientific and educational policy.
