Lectures on econometrics, machine learning and data-driven decision-making, as well as a lot of practice: employees of the Bank of Russia's central office and regional divisions spent several busy days at the Bank of Russia ML&Research Forum at the university's Mikhailovskaya Dacha campus.
GSOM SPbU hosted the ML&Research Forum "Development of Research Competences in the Bank of Russia". 160 people took part in the training.
"This is a very important area of work for the Bank of Russia, because everything we do needs a systemic view and identification of cause-and-effect relationships. We simply cannot do without the competent use of sophisticated data analysis methods," said Ksenia Yudaeva, Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Russia.
Olga Dergunova, Deputy President and Chairman of the Management Board of VTB Bank and Director of GSOM SPbU, gave a lecture on "Data-driven decision-making in practice". She explained how the application of big data has evolved in Russia and discussed with experts from the Bank of Russia the qualities a leader should possess in the era of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
"At GSOM SPbU, we teach a deep understanding that maths underlies all processes. A leader needs to understand analytics to be able to set tasks for the team, evaluate and utilise the results of its work. In the context of global digitalisation, systemic and critical thinking, the ability to hear others and adapt to changing situations are the key requirements for a successful leader," —said Olga Dergunova.
Forum participants not only listened to lectures, but also learnt how to apply knowledge in practice. In teams, they solved cases on building a predictive model of inflation, as well as on estimating losses from illegal financial activities using a wide range of data processing methods, including econometrics and machine learning.
A case is a specially prepared training material containing a methodologically structured description of situations taken from real business practice. |
Case solutions were evaluated by a jury comprised of Bank of Russia employees and representatives of SPbU.
GSOM SPbU was represented on the jury by Olga Dergunova, Deputy President and Chairman of the Management Board of VTB Bank and Director of GSOM SPbU, Elena Rogova, Director of the Centre for Market Efficiency and Applied Finance Research, and Vitaly Okulov, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Finance and Accounting.
